What is Interpersonal Group Psychotherapy?

Interpersonal Group Psychotherapy is a space where people come together each week to explore their relationships, patterns, and ways of being with others. The group becomes a safe and deeply held environment where relational patterns can emerge in real time and be explored with the support and presence of the group.

Rather than simply talking about relationships, members have the opportunity to experience themselves in relationship with others and try out new ways of being. This might involve:

  • Becoming more assertive
  • Taking up space
  • Setting a boundary
  • Expressing anger
  • Asking for what you need
  • Allowing yourself to be vulnerable
  • Learning how you are experienced by others

The diversity within the group - different ages, backgrounds, personalities and ways of relating - becomes an important part of the therapeutic experience. Through this process, members can develop new ways of relating that can then be carried into their relationships outside the group.

There is something unique about being seen, heard and held by a group of people who are fully present with you. This shared presence can create a depth of connection and interpersonal learning that can be difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Who is this group for?

This group is for people who want to understand and challenge patterns that may no longer be serving them in their relationships. It may be particularly suited to people who:

  • Want to connect with others in a more honest and vulnerable way
  • Want to feel genuinely seen and known
  • Want to develop a stronger sense of belonging
  • Are experiencing loneliness
  • Are experiencing difficulties in relationships — at home, with friends, or at work
  • Notice they keep finding themselves in familiar interpersonal patterns, including recurring conflict with colleagues or those in authority
  • Simply want to understand themselves more deeply and explore a different kind of therapeutic experience

Ultimately, the group is for anyone who wants to develop more meaningful and satisfying relationships with others and with themselves.

Benefits of Interpersonal Group Psychotherapy

  • Skills that transfer directly into relationships at home, with friends, and at work
  • A stronger, more grounded sense of belonging and connection

Group Size & Format

A maximum of 10 people will take part in the group. The group is closed, meaning the same members will meet together throughout the 10-week term. This allows the group to remain intimate while creating space for diversity and different perspectives, and gives time for trust, familiarity and deeper connection to develop..

Commitment

The group meets once a week for 90 minutes. Participants are expected to commit to and attend all 10 sessions, as consistent attendance is an important part of developing trust and connection within the group.

Confidentiality

What is shared within the group is confidential. Participants are asked to respect the privacy of other group members and not share personal information or stories discussed within the group outside of the group.

What happens after you express interest?

Once we receive your expression of interest, one of the facilitators will contact you to arrange a brief phone conversation. This gives us an opportunity to hear a little more about you, what has drawn you to the group, and what you might be hoping to explore.

It’s also a chance for you to ask any questions you may have about the group, how it works, and what you can expect from the experience.

As this is a closed therapeutic group, the conversation also gives us an opportunity to consider whether the group feels like the right fit for you, and whether it can offer the kind of support and experience you're looking for.

We're really looking forward to hearing from you and exploring whether this group might be the right next step for you.

Warmly,
Kym and Phil
